Friends. . . .

In order to help the communication flow of responses to previously posted comments, I am going to try to give a "SUBJECT" heading to the response. (Subject heading responses will be orange, so you can identify it as a response. Reminder: red highlights are sculptor-related questions/opportunities and green are administrator-related. To reply, just hit your button and send back to me.

I am sitting in my newly created office in my former one-car garage in Austin, TX. Sunny, but cold--keeps the fingertips tingly. I hope to be able to launch those long-overdue weekly specials now that I am settled in. We have a question from a listener which I think goes straight to the heart of the economics of outdoor sculpture projects. I hope all of you will grapple long and hard with this one, and start sending some responses which will suggest ways to make outdoor sculpture work for everyone. I have highlighted Sam's probing paragraph below.

Hello, I too would just like to say that this list is a great idea. My name
is Sam Spiczka and I create large-scale outdoor works that I am primarily
showing in sculpture parks around the country. Some of my work can be found
at http://www.angelfire.com/mn2/sculptorsam
The exposure and modest stipends I gain exhibiting at sculpture parks help,
but I am wondering if anybody has had any experience with their exhibiting
leading directly to sales? Where do sales lie as a priority for directors
of rotating sculpture parks? Do they use contacts with local businesses to
try to place works permanently? This is very important to me since material
costs for a single work, not to mention equipment, can easily run over
$2500.
I would just like to put in a plug for the folks at the Western Michigan
University Sculpture Tour. I am currently exhibiting there and it was a
wonderful experience, they are a wonderful group of people!
And for Matthew Smotzer, if you end up publishing your interviews in any
way, I would be very interested in learning what you found out.
Thanks,
Sam Spiczka

ICE SCULPTURE
Patricia Leguen-
I read your introduction on ice and sand- I know someone who carves ice annually up in Fairbanks Alaska perhaps he has info for you- real nice guy- Call the University of Montana Graduate Art Department in Missoula, Montana and ask for a phone number for a grad student named "Roger" unfortunatly I forget his last name, but you might enjoy talking to him. anyway the art office at the unversity should know who he is and how to get a hold of him.
Good luck

Hello friends:
I am George F. Drake, chair of the City of Bellingham (Washington State)
"Big Rock Garden Park Sculpture Committee". Our small sculpture park is
only two and a half acres in size landscaped with azaleas, rhododendrons
and almost a hundred varieties of Japanese maples. Our project is but 2
years old. We have a goal of having a permanent collection of 100 works in
ten years. Already we have 22 sculptures in the permanent collection. In
addition we have the Annual International Sculpture Exhibit with from 20 to
30 works by artists from many countries. The annual show opening is on
Mothers' Day at which time we have upwards of two thousand people attend
the ceremonies. The park is in full bloom at that time. For those who want
to be part of next year's show copy an entry form from our temporary web
site <www.gardenart.org> <http://www.gardenart.org> . Next year we will also open our "Invitational
Gallery" with a major retrospective show of the work of David Marshall of
Vancouver, BC, Canada.
The big art news for us this year was the acquisition of a 12 ft. tall
steel sculpture by Sebastian of Mexico City. Sebastian and his wife
Gabriela were here for the dedication of the work. We also received a
lovely life-size bronze horse sculpture by the American artist Ann Morris.
Today donors gave us funds to acquire a steel sculpture by local artist
C.A. Scott. Two marble sculptures by the Russian sculptor Alexei
Kazantsev, a marble sculpture by Charles Anderson of Hawaii, one by the
former Hungarian (now Canadian) artist Georg Schmerholz and a work by
former New Zealand (now Oregonian) artist Devin Laurence Field were among
the other acquisitions to the permananet collection this year. We invite
all sculptors who read this to enter a work in next year's show. Our goal
is to acquire two or more works from each show for the permanent
collection. For more information contact me (George F. Drake)

A New Leaf Gallery, in Berkeley was established in 1990 and is Northern California‚s premier contemporary sculpture gallery showing museum quality fine art sculpture, art furniture and fountains in a unique, beautifully landscaped environment. !0,000 square feet of exhibit space showcase over 200 works from table-top to monumental, by over 80 established sculptors from all parts of the country in six stunning group shows each year. Our current web site is www.sculpturesite.com <http://www.sculpturesite.com>
We are in the process of building an entirely new website and have the ambition of making it THE BEST contemporary commercial website. Works will be juried. There will be a lot of well written general info about contemporary sculpture, collecting, maintenance, etcand we are expecting to have the new site replace the current one within 1 to 2 months. Same URL.
Check it out, and submit images and bio if you would like to be considered for inclusion (we‚ll let you know of the terms, etc after we have reviewed your material). Because we have shown all outdoor works for 10 years, we‚ll specifically want to add indoor pieces and are also looking for sculptors doing large environmental installations (land sculpture) and conceptual works. Please, contact us at our home office: 707 785 1936

Hello, I am Charles Rayburn, I'm a sculptor living in central Ohio who wishes to create more outdoor sculpture. I'm interested in finding resources that will allow me to work with more permanent materials in the future. How do other sculptors deal with issues like storage, transportation, or material cost, outside of a commission? All of which makes me an emerging outdoor/public/environmental artist. I am excited to be a part of this forum. crobo@columbus.rr.com

Hello, I'm Carlos Pedreros, a Peruvian sculptor-painter
who is deeply interested in developing non comercial
proposals at this time because there's not enough space
for research (the principal aim in aesthetics) I would
like to know about other artists who have a similar
aproach in their concept about art.

Hello, my name is Stacey Savatsky and I'm the Public Art Coordinator for the
City of Atlanta, Bureau of Cultural Affairs. I am happy to subscribe to
this site. After working as a Museum Registrar for many years, I found that
the American Association of Museum's Registrar's list-serve was an
invaluable resource of information, and I'm sure this site will be just as
helpful for the field of public art.
