Are People Too Scared To Shop Online?

From: usa newyork

Sculptists. . . .

Hey. Sorry to have ignored you for a couple of weeks. Maybe your mailboxes needed a break from these big emails? Anyway, my grandmother died and I had to be out of town.

Enclosed please find the postings folks have been sending in. The following is a reminder about the listserv, since we have so many new members:

You are tuned in to the Outdoor Sculpture Projects Listserv hosted by the International Sculpture Center. The list is around 400 persons from all over the world: sculptors, curators, museum & sculpture park administrators, landscape architects, etc. I moderate the list. People can ask questions of each other, or make comments, and I post items I think would be of interest to the group on a weekly basis. To post something to the list, send email in REPLY to this message.

If you would like to join simply send an email to <outdoor-art-request@sculpture.net> with the word "subscribe" as the subject. If you would like to remove yourself from the the list send an email to the same address with the word "remove" as the subject. This happens instantaneously. I cannot control list settings.

Take care,
RJ

SCHOOL INITIATED SCULPTURE PARK
Hi, I realize it is past Nov. 15. I just read your site and found it
interesting because my partner teacher and I have just begun a project to
turn an adjoining park at our school into an outdoor art project. We have
just received permission from the city to complete our plan and do the
student/community project. We are excited and would like any information
you can provide. My partner is the art teacher and artist and I am a
special ed. teacher working with high risk and emotionally disturbed teens.
We think the project could be a way to link our kids and program with the
community and city. Thanks for your time. Tim Garrett

CAMPUS SCULPTURE PARKS
Hello Randy, My name is Caroline Doll and I work for California's
fledgling university Ca. State Univ. Channel Islands. I am particularly
interested in how sculpture gardens are typically set up on campuses and
under what terms. Jumping around your web site I have spotted several
institutions which quite likely would be able to provide useful
information but I thought I would start with you to see if you have any
"gems of wisdom" to offer at the outset. Any advise you have is
appreciated. Thank you. Caroline

NORTH TEXAS PROGRAM

Hello! As part of a Teaching with Technology grant from the University of
North Texas, I have designed and implimented a sculpture course that
includes working in the shop (in the more or less traditional approach to
sculpture), but I've developed the curriculum to include a distance learning
aspect. With this grant, I have purchased a pretty hefty Pentium III and
loaded 3-D Studio Max, among other programs, on it. The course will be
giving students the opportunity to utilize the design capabilities of the
computer, the shop, and the sketchbook as a complete thinking/making concept
and device. The idea is to digitally shoot work that the students are making
in the shop and on the computer, and email them to sculptors from around the
world in a scheduled format so my students can communicate globally their
ideas, and receive back global critique and feedback. If you are interested
in participating, please contact me at: katehunt@unt.edu. As well, I have
been downloading the emails that Randy has been sending out, and will have
them available to this same group of students so they can individually
contact sites that are of interest to them personally, so you just might
hear from us sometime this spring semester too! Thank you very much, and we
look forward to hearing from you.

„Celebration of the Spirit‰
Outdoor Art Exhibition at Lake View Cemetery

Artists are invited to submit for an outdoor group exhibition of
contemporary three-dimensional artwork. Approximately 30 artworks will be
selected and the exhibition will be sited throughout the grounds of Lake
View Cemetery, July 6, 2001- June 30, 2002. The exhibition goal is to
create an aesthetic venue for education, visitor interaction, and
recognition of the arts. Media that may be involved include (but are not
limited to): sculpture, multi-media, installation, landscape architecture,
and architecture. A wide interpretation of theme, „Celebration of the
Spirit,‰ is encouraged. A jury of arts professionals will consider existing
artwork and site-specific proposals for the exhibition.

The jury will be selecting artworks based on the following characteristics:

-artistic excellence
-relation to the exhibition theme/reflecting various interpretations of the
theme
-appropriateness for outdoor venue
-diversity of materials and approaches

Lake View Cemetery, founded in 1869, is known as „Cleveland‚s Outdoor
Museum.‰ The 285-acre grounds are rich with significant art and
architecture, as well as impressive offerings in horticulture, geology, and
animal life. Modeled after the garden cemeteries of Victorian England and
France, Lake View was developed in a rural arboretum setting. The name was
selected because of the magnificent view of Lake Erie, one of the Great
Lakes. The cemetery‚s history and heritage is filled with the names of
those who made great contributions to Cleveland‚s and the nation‚s,
industrial, civic, social, and cultural fabric. A few examples include John
D. Rockefeller, Garrett Morgan, Adella Prentiss Hughes, Eliot Ness, Carl
Stokes, and President James A. Garfield.

Today, Lake View Cemetery is considered an urban oasis for recreation and
contemplation and is neighbored by renowned cultural institutions including
the Cleveland Museum of Art, Case Western Reserve University, and Severance
Hall (home of the Cleveland Orchestra). As an active cemetery, Lake View
welcomes over 360,000 visitors each year for tours, hikes, picnics, and
memorial purposes. For the purposes of this exhibition, the grounds have a
variety of sites - wooded, open fields, areas surrounding small lakes,
ravines, and more.

Selected artists will be provided an honorarium in the amount of $1,000.
There will be a catalog produced for the exhibition and a full marketing
program. Sales of the works will be encouraged and Lake View will retain a
20% commission on sold works. Work will remain on exhibition for one year
and should be suitable for the Midwest climate. Shipping costs are the
responsibility of the artist and works will need to arrive at Lake View
Cemetery no later than June 1, 2001. Artists should indicate any time
restrictions that conflict with the exhibition dates in their submission
materials. Installation will be handled by a professional museum preparator
in conjunction with Lake View‚s skilled staff. Works will be insured when
they arrive at Lake View Cemetery where 24 hour security is provided.
Participants may be contracted additionally for residencies, lectures, or
demonstrations. Lake View Cemetery intends to extend the life of the
exhibition beyond the first year and is currently exploring various options
including purchasing works for permanent display and a series of temporary
exhibitions.

The selection process will occur in early March and all submitting artists
will be notified of selection outcomes in writing immediately following.

DOCUMENT TWO
Celebration of the Spirit
Outdoor Art at Lake View Cemetery

Requirements and Potential Locations for Site-Specific Proposals

Artists are encouraged to develop site-specific proposals for consideration
by the jury. The following pages provide details on the sites that have
been selected for such works. You are asked to provide a limited proposal
at this time. This should take the form of 2-3 paragraphs explaining your
concept. You may also include preliminary sketches. Along with your
proposal, please include the following:

-up to 10 slides of previous work

-a slide sheet - please use this document to provide details on your slides

-SASE for return of materials

If your proposal is selected, you will be asked to provide a more detailed
proposal including drawings and a scale model, dimensions, installation and
maintenance requirements.

Site One
Mayfield Gate area

This is one of the two main entrances to Lake View Cemetery. The potential
sites in this area include the two pieces of land just inside the gates, the
large island inside the gate to the right (also located in front of the
mausoleum), and the triangle of land that is directly across from the
entrance gate. These prominent locations provide opportunities to relate to
the striking architecture of the gates themselves, the contemporary backdrop
of the mausoleum‚s architecture, as well as the surrounding natural
landscape. This gate is located on Mayfield Road (a major thoroughfare) and
these locations have visibility to passer-by traffic through the iron fence.
There is access to electricity in this area.

Dimensions:
These are approximate dimensions
Areas are measured at the widest points
Area inside gate to left: 73‚ x 10‚
Area inside gate to right: two rectangular areas
Area along side of mausoleum: 98‚ x 76‚
Area just inside gate: 68‚ x 46‚
Large island in front of mausoleum: 90‚ x 99‚
Central triangle: 45‚ (measured area between two Japanese Maples) x 60‚

Site Two
Wade Lake, Dempsey Lake and Wade Chapel areas

These areas provide a variety of natural landscapes - two lakes surrounded
by lush green fields, flowering trees, and wildlife. In addition the Hubbel
and Benes designed Wade Chapel, with its magnificent Louis Comfort Tiffany
designed interior, provides a point of reference for numerous creative
opportunities. Artists are also invited to propose works that would be
installed in the lake/s.

Dimensions:

Areas are measured at the widest points
Area in front of Wade Chapel: two rectangular areas on either side of door =

Area around Dempsey Lake: 126‚ x 165‚

Site Three
Daffodil Hill

This is a favorite spot in Lake View Cemetery, especially in the spring when
the daffodils are in bloom. The over 100,000 bulbs are planted for a
staggered blooming schedule. The gently sloping hill provides a varied
landscape throughout the seasons. The hill is located at a prominent
intersection within the cemetery.

Dimensions:

Areas are measured at the widest points
Area along Foothill Road: 520‚ long x 150‚ high
Area along Woodhill Road: 270‚ long x 110‚ high

Site Four
Euclid Gate

This is one of the two main gates for Lake View Cemetery and is located on a
major thoroughfare. The potential sites are located inside the gates, one
to the right and one to the left. The site inside to the right of the gate
provides a backdrop of the historical main office building. The site inside
to the left of the gate includes a row of tree lilacs which would provide a
brilliant spring backdrop for a work. Both sites have visibility to passing
traffic through the iron fence. Both areas are shaded by mature trees.
There is access to electrical power at this site.

Dimensions:
