Digest 15
Are People Too Scared To Shop Online?
From: usa newyork
Sculptists. . . .
Hope all of you are having a great week. It's been sort of a
quiet one at Outdoor Sculpture headquarters. I hope all of you
had a chance to read Nick Capasso's piece at www.sculpture.org
<http://www.sculpture.org> on approaching sculpture parks.
Today I have a few opportunities for sculptors, some links to
some reccomended art web sites, and perhaps a conversation
starter about the proliferation of "cows" exhibition
projects.
I will be in New Jersey next week to talk to ISC Executive
Director Jeff Nathanson about membership and marketing issues for
the ISC. I welcome any input you all might have about how the ISC
can better serve and attract members, and how the ISC can market
itself to further its mission.
Have a fun weekend,
RJ

COWS (Red Wolves)
Well, you knew somebody had to do it: the Raleigh Arts Commission
is
sponsoring one of the international art parades. What better for
Raleigh
than the Red Wolf? (an endangered species, like public art in
Raleigh) The
City Council gave their approval yesterday, the N&O announced
it front page
today, and the TV stations are doing initial interviews this
afternoon. A
call for artists is going out soon. You will see it, but I
thought this
group would be interested in a pre-press heads up. Should be fun,
and we
hope that after a successful project, we can do more serious
projects in
Raleigh as well.
Joseph Covington
Chair, Raleigh Arts Commission
As an aside to Joseph's announcement, I recently read where the
Swiss
production firm that initiated the very first "cow"
parade in Zurich is suing
Chicago and New York cow parade sponsors for copyright
infringement. Most
likely this will never make its way through the courts, but its
interesting to
consider whether the copyright infringement is in stealing the
image of the cow
as art or in borrowing the idea of using cookie cutter public art
as a fund
raiser. Is nothing sacred? stay tune. jy

MEL CHIN LECTURE
To: Nashville Arts Organizations
============================================================
Sculptor Mel Chin To Give Public Art Forum Talk
------------------------------------------------------------
Noted artist and Peabody College alumnus Mel Chin will be
guest speaker on the Public Art Forum series Thursday, Feb.
22, at 7 p.m. Chin's video and slide lecture will be in room
126 of David K. Wilson Hall on the Vanderbilt University
campus, 111 21st Avenue South, Nashville. The event is free
and open to the public.
Series sponsors are the Metro Nashville Arts Commission, the
Vanderbilt University Fine Arts Gallery, the Vanderbilt
University Medical Center Office of Cultural Enrichment, the
Visual Arts Alliance of Nashville (VAAN), and the Frist
Center for the Visual Arts.
Chin has expanded the definition of public art through the
distinctive installations he has created over the past 25
years. The artist is known for the broad range of approaches
in his art, including works that require multi-disciplinary,
collaborative teamwork and works that join together
cross-cultural aesthetics with complex ideas.
Since the 1970s Chin has produced sculptures that combine
art, science, and imagination, such as his Revival Field
ecological projects. One of his current projects is the
Nashville Cultural Arts Project (NCAP) at the former Neuhoff
Packing Plant between First Avenue North and the Cumberland
River. The NCAP is helping to sponsor Chin's Public Art
Forum appearance.
Chin is one of 16 artists who will be featured on the Public
Broadcasting Service series Art of the 21st Century to be
broadcast later this year. One of his small sculptures is on
the Carell Woodland Sculpture Trail at Cheekwood.
