Sculptists. . .

Well, aren't computers sometimes just grand! Last week I lost my entire
hard drive. 'Nough said, otherwise it is all profanity. I lost a
couple of things I was going to post, so if you wanted something posted
and don't see it here, please resend.

Anyway, in here you'll find a couple of opportunities, a response to the
issue of authorship of sculptures created by fabricators, and the
announcement of an Art Discussion Forum.

Just a reminder that Pittsburgh is only five weeks away. A fantastic
ISC Conference is brewing, not to mention party at my house. Sign up
now, and don't forget the special focus groups for Outdoor Sculpture
Projects.

Take care,
Randy

ps -- If you are a friend on this list, I would appreciate it if you
dropped me an email saying, "hi" since I lost all my email database!!

Public art is gaining momentum throughout the country. Stay on top of
the trends and opportunities by attending Compel + Provoke: Public

for the Arts. You'll exchange ideas, share new approaches and engage
in critical dialogue. You'll also explore new neighborhoods,
experience public art and meet artists in their studios. Study
sessions and panels will be designed to reach out to established and
emerging professionals. Highlights include a keynote address by
international artist Mierle Laderman Ukeles, the Year Review session

Becker and Harriet Senie, dynamic tours and a reception at the
International Center for Photography.

and a Year In Review application.

EARLY REGISTRATION DEADLINE MAY 15, 2001.

Compel + Provoke: Public Art 2001 is a preconference to
pARTicipate2001, the first joint convention of Americans for the Arts
and the National Assembly of State Arts Agencies

pARTicipate2001 will take place in New York July 28-31, 2001. This
convention will be the largest
gathering of representatives from the local and state arts agency
fields who along with funders, educators, artists, policy makers and
others will come together and learn from each other in the creation
of personal and collective strategies for advancing the impact of the
arts on livable communities.

Leading with the notion that the arts play a critical role in
developing communities that are vibrant, inclusive and economically
prosperous, attendees will explore ten characteristics of communities
in which the arts are instrumental in improving their livability.

WHOSE WORK IS IT??
Whose work? The artist's of course!
The craftsman, the SLA (stereolithography Apparatus), the welder, the
computer, the milling machine, the pencil. All of these and more would
not
have jumped to action without the artist who shouldered the risk for
producing his creative vision or developmental procedure.

The printer is not the Author and the subcontractors are not the
Developer.
The Artist chooses when to sharpen a chisel or can choose a foundry
which may
work "soup to nuts" from his maquette. The artist can be a layman and
be
pushing the envelope of his experience or a master craftsman honing his
skills with each brush stroke. The artist is the reason that a work of
art
comes to fruition and the tool is only the means.

The history is an important aspect of any work of art and should be
celebrated, but ultimately a work of art is completed by a decision by
the
artist.

ON-LINE ART FORUM
I just got the good news from Carolyn Blakeslee Proeber, who is the
original founder and
editor-in-chief of Art Calendar Magazine. She has brought back the Art
Calendar Discussion Forum. You can access it from
http://www.ArtCalendar.com, or go to it directly at
http://www.ArtScuttlebutt.com.
Please share the news with fellow artists. This is a wonderful way
for us to gain inspiration and support each others creative expression.
Best,
Barbara Januszkiewicz.
