Sculptists. . . .

First my grandmother, then my computer -- all you guys hear about are
opportunities and deaths in my family!! Thanks for all the condolences.

This week we have a mixed bag, as usual. Some opportunities, some
announcements, some questions. Check it out.

This week marks the beginning of more than a week of art stuff in
Chicago. As we speak 90 monumental works are being installed on Navy
Pier for Pier Walk 2001. Next week ArtChicago opens on the Pier, and
the ISC opens a very special show at Wood Street Gallery. If you are in
the neighborhood, take it in. I am going to the neighborhood to check
it myself!

Don't forget Pittsburgh!! ISC Conference is just a month away. Carol
Sterling and I have organized these special events just for Outdoor
Sculpture Projects enthusiasts: Networking Cocktail Reception on Thurs.
June 7th and a Complimentary Networking Luncheon & Program for Friday
the 8th. PLUS all the regular features of the conference! Email Carol
<carol@sculpture.org> for registration packet.

Keep the info flowing.

WEB SPECIAL AT www.sculpture.org
(this is a great article about a super idea for collaborating with your
community)

To: All Outdoor Art and Sculpture Parks and Gardens Colleagues
From: Carol Sterling, ISC Director of Education
The most recent ISC Web Special on Outdoor Art and Sculpture Parks and
Gardens Projects is now on the ISC website at: www.sculpture.org
Take a look at the spirited article," A Promotional Strategy That Worked

for the Krasl Art Center: Collaborate with Community Groups!" that
describes how the Center increased attendance and mobilized community
members as sculpture advocates. Dar Davis and Susan Wilczak share their
success story of how they forged partnerships with some community groups

and how it has been a win-win for everyone involved.
I look forward to seeing everyone in Pittsburgh where we can continue
sharing stories, successes , problems and solutions!

STEEL ETCHING/ENGRAVING??
Randy,
I would like to post a query. I am interested in whether 1/4" steel
plate
can be incised (engraved, etched, routed ??) and where I might find a
resource to do several lines one inch high on a steel plate six feet
high. I
would greatly appreciate any help your readers could give me.
Thanks much,
Pat Musick

ALTERNATIVE FINISHES FOR STEEL??
Sorry to hear about your computer mishap.
I have primed and painted some of my outdoor sculptures on the campus of
my
alma mater, SUNY Old Westbury with Rustoleum primer and paint. So far
so
good , for the finishes are going on 2 years strong. My question is,
does
anyone know of any other alternative finishes for steel outdoor
sculptures?

OPENING OF SCULPTURE ONLY GALLERY IN BARCELONA
Hello Randy,,
We know how you feel, our whole system was damaged by lightening two
falls
ago, not only the hard disk, two computers, fax and television were
completely knocked out.

Tomorrow May 2, with an enormous feeling of illusion, we will
open a gallery dedicated to contemporary sculpture in Barcelona, I
closed
the Tom Maddock Gallery in 1992 for health reasons and now with the help
of
my son William who is in his last year of Business magagement in Sport
at
Barcelona University we open MADDOCK GALLERY in a house with a garden
on
one of the hills over looking Barcelona. The gallery will be dedicated
to
the sale and promotion of contemporary sculpture and related drawings
and
paintings.

The first exhibition is 3D + 2D Three Dimensional work plus Two
Dimensional related works. For example a small painting of a Menina
after
the style of VelazquÈz together with a hard edge corten steel Menina,
both
by the catalan artist ALFONSO ALZAMORA. This exhibition will be promoted
in
the UK this year and then in Europe as a travelling show.

In 1994 I started an ambitious plan for out door shows in a park in
Barcelona, we planned to show 5 artists, Magdalena Abakanowicz, Jorgen
Haugen Sorenson, Bruce Beasely, Lynn Chadwick and Julio Hernandez.
Unfortunately with a change in the political structure we only succeeded
in
fulfilling the first two shows which were incredible. The works by
Magdalena
Abakanowicz went on from here to form part of the fantastic show that
Peter
Murray organised at the Yorkshire Sculpture Park.

In 1999 with William's help we put up the show DINS JARDINS six very
large
temporary works in the main artery of the Parc de la Ciudadella in
Barcelona, each artist held a round table discussion on the work
exhibited.
See the web page Newletters June 1999.

We will be showing the exhibition in full and profiles on the
participating
artists also updating our activities on the page we edit on the Internet

www.sculptour.org.
Visits from American sculptors and ists are welcome.
Cheerio,
TOM MADDOCK.

CORRECTION
Last week's posting for an opportunity in Santa Cruz had an incorrect
URL. Here is the one that works!!

THE BIG PICTURE
I am a 'friend' but not a very active one, I'm afraid. I always read
but I
haven't participated much yet. You're doing a good job though and I
value
the work you're doing. Keep it up.

I find a lot of the discussion tedious and often embarrassing, in terms
of
things that are of genuine value and relevance to work, to 'art', and my

identity as an artist. I tend to try to keep my 'nose to the
grindstone' as
it were and just do the work that I do. A good 10 or 12 years ago I
started
calling myself an 'art republican' in response to so much of the sorry
work
that I was seeing in NY at the time. Some of the arguments being tossed
out
there in the discussion forum have inclined me back to considering
myself,
in some part, still an 'art radical' or at least a 'democrat'. At least
it
was good to see my hackles could be raised in defense of some of those
who
are being scorned by the likes of the 'animal artists'. I don't want to
sit
as a critic in this arena but I have little patience with academic
patter
and ignorant patter alike. If you can't grasp it maybe you just can't
grasp
it. If it 'works' it 'works'. If you have to argue it to validate it,
I'm
afraid I'm probably not really interested enough. Well maybe, and maybe

not. History has a lot to say in the matter. I always find it
interesting
that the oldest work we know has long lost the advocates who can argue
it's
meaning or importance. We are left only with the work which we admire
or
not, value or not. When we are able to glean the history, generally all
the
better, but we can never really understand, really know, what it was
like in
the moment. We can not know what the effect of today's work will have
in a
hundred years or a thousand years. By that time who really has anything
to
say about it. Maybe these are bigger questions than I have any business

asking.
Thanks for your time.
Tim de Christopher

OPPORTUNITY FOR 2-D
This is not a public art or outdoor sculpture
competition. I normally do not announce non-public art commissions,
but since this is in the state of NC and you may know of artist who
would be interested, I am listing this one as a favor to the director.
I won't make it a habit. Perhaps you can pass this on to other email
groups of artists you are in contact with.

The Halpert Biennial, a national, visual arts competition and
exhibition juried by Alan Eaker requests original 2-d works of art
(photographs excluded). Artists must reside in the U.S. and be at
least 18 years of age. $5,000 in cash awards.

Deadline: May 30
$15 for up to 2 slides
exhibition dates July 1 - sept. 30

HOW DOES IT WORK?
Hi, Randy... I'm sorry to hear about your hard disc. Please keep me on
your
list. I enjoy the chatter...and problem solving. For instance, I'm about
to
open a site to show some pix of my sculpture, and hope to find out how
to
sell some, and how to price them.... also how to handle the fabrication
question...." I make the model... the steel or other material
fabricators
would make the LARGE "copy" for the actual display." I'm new to this,
and
am not sure just how to proceed. Thanks, and keep up the good work.
