RESPONSE TO FILMMAKER"S COMMENT:
For Sam Spiczka:
Regarding collaborators and workers, of course they should be
given
credit like in films, plays and other collaborative works. I
always do
so for my public art projects, even on the plaque, if the owner
allows.
Please look at the CREDITS pages at the end of my book
"Dancing in the

WORKMAN'S COMP RESPONSES
In your response to the workman's comp inquiry:
When doing commissions, and artist should have workman's comp on
his
employees who are working on the project. There are too many of
horror
stories about bad economic things to those who are not covred and
have a
job related accident and how that can destroy their economic
future.
As for installations. One can point to their workman's comp
account and
say
they are covered and also to their business liability insurance.
The
other
way is to say they are selling a product and just delivering it.
I had one client take out a key man policy on me for the duration
of the
project with the value of the job paid out at the end if
something bad
happened to me. He paid the freight on it . . . It was business.
Bottom line is the client has deep pockets and is exposed to
risk. He
expects the artist to take care of business and would appreciate
seeing
that
in the budget. How can they argue against it?
Mike Speaker
Hi Randy,
Nice to have you back. Thanks for bringing this problem to our
attention. I
guess one simply builds that fee into one's sculpting fee for a
site
installation and the customer pays for it. It is a good thing to
have
though expensive. Perhaps insurance companies would be interested
in
a
site specific coverage and the fee would be a much lower one? I'm
off to
inspect the memorial site for the Alaska Airlines 261 submission.
The
committee are meeting tomorrow and will select 5 artists for
personal
interviews and then one from the five whom they feel most
understands
their
needs for this (sad) installation. This submission request was
handled
very differently than most. They wanted the usual 10 slides of
past
work
but they also wanted sketches or written descriptions of
proposals
for the
memorial. No remuneration at this point but perhaps the chosen
artist
can
build a fee in at the appropriate time to cover this part of the
submission
too. Victoria
CASTING FROM STONE
To Mary Hetrick, If it is transportable take it to the foundry
and they
will
do the rest for you. If it is not transportable there are mold
makers
you can
locate through foundries who will come to your work and make the
mold in
sections, dismantle them after setting and bolt them together for
transport
to the foundry for the wax and metal compositions. Bronzing
though is
very
expensive so you might want to get an order in place before going
to
this
expense. You could of course merely make the mold and store it
for a
while.
Cheaper and you will have captured the imag but the molds do have
a
shelf
life. Check with the mold maker or foundry.Good Luck Victoria
TEMPORARY WORK AS FERTILIZER
In a message dated 5/15/01 9:15:44 AM Mountain Daylight Time,
rjcj@texas.net
writes:
. Staab makes
geometric sculptures out of sand, reeds and stickes, teasing
mathematical truths out of the jumble of the natural world. His
sculptures, ephemeral as fog, disintegrate as the days pass, a
metaphore

Just like the animal art that has begun to appear in garden
magazines.
They
are now making them of manure in molds. These you place in
strategic
places
and as they slowly dissolve they also fertilize the garden. Who
says
thats
not equally art? Victoria
COATING STEEL
Coating on Steel
I have 3 methods for coating steel all of which you can view on
my
website:
www.phelanmeek.com
1. Galvanize the steel, then coat with Modern Options patina
solutions
2. 3 coats of a metal primer from Sweden, then oil based enamels
3. Hammerite fiberglass paints--does not require a primer, paint
directly
onto the steel. I wrote an article about my painting process
which was
published in Fabricator Magazine in November 1999. I am
completely in
love
with Hammerite paints and the effects that you can get. This is
not an
ad,
I do not work for Hammerite. Check out my website and go to the
two
dimensional page and you'll see some of the things I've been able
to do
with
it.
In all of these methods unless the object is placed out of doors
I have
not
had to recoat yet. Some of the pieces are 7 years old.
