Sculptists. . .

Looks like "back to school" is the theme for the week. We have some
good submissions in response to Ellen Kucera's request for some grad
schools that focus on outdoor sculpture. We also have some commissions
associated with Universities.

And today I am going on a field trip with Roger Colombik and his
students from Southwest Texas State University in San Marcos, TX! We
are going to Dallas to the opening of the Texas Sculpture Park, a
corporate collection that I have been hearing about from Texas sculptors
I have been meeting since the ISC conference in Houston two years ago.
Roger does great outdoor work, and started an outdoor sculpture show in
San Marcos last year for his students and regional sculptors.

We've also got submissions about a student public art project in CA, and
a question from a Kate Foxon in England who is doing a project with
outdoor sculpture that kids can play on.
Also look for lots of opportunities, some questions and comments from
our listeners, and other goodies. Keep it coming.

I hope you all are doing well,
Randy

MEMORIAL INFO?
Dear Randy -
Re: Texas A&M Bonfire Memorial
I gather information about monuments and memorials. Anything you might
have about this subject that you could make me aware of would be
appreciated.
And needless to say, any other suggestions you might have about my
interest would be welcomed.

GRAD SCHOOLS
Here is a response to Ellen Kucera's request for information about grad
schools.
To: Ellen Kucera
From: Carol Sterling, ISC Director of Education and Resource Center
I wanted to add to Randy's recommendation that you visit the ISC website

at www.sculpture.org.
When you visit the website, go to the navigation bar on the left and
click on Educational Organizations and then Undergraduate and Graduate
Programs in Sculpture. ISC encourages all colleges, universities and art

schools that have sculpture programs to post information about their
courses, facilities, faculty, alumni, etc. on the ISC website. We are
pleased to post those who have sent in their information.
Additionally, we invite prospective sculpture students to check out the
schools of students who have been selected as ISC Outstanding Student
Achievement in Sculpture Award winners. On the website, just click on
the Awards section on the navigation bar on the left. You will see
winners from the past three years and their respective schools.
Another way to utilize the ISC website to identify a potential school is

to visit the Portfolio section and in the searchable database type in
the type of material you are interested in learning more about. Then
visit the Portfolios of artists who work in this media and check out
where they went to school. You may want to email the artist and inquire
whether s/he would recommend their program.
Good luck and let us know where you decide to go and why you selected
this program.

GRAD SCHOOLS (Continued)
Good Morning Ellen Kucera,
I read your query about grad schools which Randy Jewart published in his

Digest. You state your interest in large scale outdoor works.

May I recommend to you the School of Art and Design at San Jose State
University in San Jose, CA. It has fine shop facilities, ceramic/glass

facilities, and a great foundry. There is a very diverse faculty and
some of them are involved in various large scale works. One talented
energetic Professor in particular, David Middlebrook, has many large
works in both public and private sites around the US. He along with
Professors David Anderson, Linda Walsh, and Stan Welsh provide a broad
background for the direction which interests you.

The Director of the School is Dr Robert Milnes and the web address is:
www.sjsu.edu/depts/art_design/
All the best with your career,
Harry Powers, Professor Emeritus, SJSU

GRAD SCHOOLS (continued)
I read your question in Randy Jewart's Sculpture News and have some info

that may be of help. I'm on the Emerging Artist's Committee with two
other people through the ISC. Our goal is to provide information to
younger emerging sculptors and students who are just getting started. We

had a room in Pittsburgh at the ISC conference with computers with links

to residencies, grants, and grad schools, mentoring sessions, spill over

sessions from various panel discussions, and a "networking" (I really
hate that word) party Thursday for all of the students and emerging
sculptor's in attendence, which happened to be one of the largest
demographics at the conference this year.

I put together a web page with hyperlinks to over 175 different schools
in the US who have graduate sculpture programs. The links are to the
schools' Art Dept. Home pages so you'll have to browse around to get to
the sculpture department. This site is on my school's server...I will
keep it active until I hear from them otherwise.

The URL for the grad school site is
http://classweb.mnstate.edu/meersman/temp_index.htm

I have heard that the U of Washington in Seattle has started a new multi

disciplinary public art program that may be of interest. Hope this
helps. -Marty Meersman

SCULPTURE FOR KIDS?
Kate Foxon
Mill Farm
Harry Lane

Dear Sir,
I am currently studying A level Design and have just begun my major
project. For this, I
have decided to design and make a form of a sculpture that can provide
interactive
entertainment for children.

I propose for this to go in a local attraction, the ŒMillenium Green‚.
The reason why I have
chosen this is because I often see children in the area and I feel there
should be something for them to enjoy, and I feel that playground
equipment would spoil the atmosphere, therefore a sculpture in my
opinion, would give more of a subtle touch.

However, I am writing to you to see whether you could possibly offer me
any information
that may help me throughout my project. This could simply be catalogues
or pictures
showing some of your sculptures or if you have any knowledge on the
artist's inspiration.

Any information would be a great help and I would be very grateful.
Thanks for your time and help.
Your truly,
Kate Foxon

STUDENTS AND PUBLIC ART
Dear ISC:
I am artist involved in making my first outdoor learning
center/sculpture
garden at Peralta, a local elementary school in my neighborhood in North

Oakland, CA. I raised $12,500 from the Potrero Nuevo Fund, another $5200
from
the Oakland Division of ultural Arts and $1000 from the PTA. We are
going to
get underway this October. This school has become a "model school" for
politicians because the principal has been so supportive of
artists-in-residence. It is an inner city school with 80%
African-American
student body. The parents, students and teachers will all be actively
involved in planning and execution.I would benefit greatly by being on
your
list and by sharing my experience with others. THANKYOU!!!

FRANCOIS DAVIN
In reply to Francois Davin
I was interested to hear about your work - I have worked for the past 10

years making temporary site-specific sculptures from local found and
natural
materials. Also, my partner is a professional storyteller and we have
worked
together on projects dealing with story and landscape. I would be
interested
to hear more about your work, also about the Artists in Nature
International
NEtwork. I am a member of the Landscape and Art Network

AiNIN
Artists in Nature International Network
We are artists and communities interested in art in nature.

We believe that art in nature implies respecting nature, not using or
abusing it for the sake of art. We think that this respect implies a
specific creation for each site. We feel that this approach might be
one way to involve a very large part of the population that has not so
far been interested in the "object oriented" traditional presentation of
art in museums, galleries, and public spaces. Art in nature is one of
the areas of art where the famous "new public" can at last be
accessible.

Many artists and communities in the world have been creating and
progressing along these lines in the past few decades. Their efforts
(our efforts), have brought an increasing consciousness of this approach
to art making to the population at large. As an organisation, we
already represent a significant number of artists and communities in the
five continents.
So far, prior to the establishment of Artists in Nature International
Network, our encounters have been based on personal affinities,
friendships, and individual networks which have allowed only a limited
number of artists to encounter a limited number of organisers of events
and vice versa. We believe that there is a need to open and broaden
these networks into a large platform of encounter. We expect this
platform to not only help all those who are already active in this field
to know each other, but also to encourage and reassure those communities
who are interested to create new events.

To achieve this, we needed both an organisation and an efficient
communication tool. We have been meeting since December 1998 to refine
our ideas, and created a non-profit association in April 1999, and
consequently confirmed our structure and goals at the end of June 2000.
The tool we chose in May 2001 as our principal form of communication is
a web site which links to the web pages of members, artists and
organising communities. A Forum and a Newsletter will allow both
discussions and exchange of information between members.
The site is being developed and will be active by the summer of 2001.

We are open to visual arts, performance, music and written media as long
as they are site specific.

Being non-profit oriented, all our activity is based on benevolent
active members. It allows a very low membership fee : 20 euros for
artists and 50 euros for groups of artists and events.

If you are interested, you can :
Ask for information on the evolution of the Network, by sending an email
to : artists.in.nature@wanadoo.fr
Apply to be a member by filling the form below, and paying your yearly
fee. Upon approval and receipt, we will place you on the members'
maillist and put your personal data onto the website.

ALASKA FLIGHT MEMORIAL UPDATE
Dear Randy,
I thought others might be interested to know that two finalists were
chosen
for the Alaska Airlines Memorial Sculpture. They are Bud Bottoms who
submitted two pieces, a Sundial and Porpoises and Georgia Gerber who
submitted people releasing doves. I believe the Sundial and Porpoises
were
the first two choices of the 80 family members who voted and that the
overall
winning submission was the Sundial representing time and one minute when
all
88 family members and crew died in that horrible Airline Crash.
Congratulations to the winner. Victoria Varley Sculptor.

PRESS RELEASE: VICTORY PLAZA, AMERICAN AIRLINES CENTER, DALLAS, TX
August 2001 (Photos: Randal Vanderveer)

Victory Plaza, at the South entrance of the American Airlines Center,
the new sports arena of Dallas, was defined by the building‚s architect,
David Schwartz, as a 40,000 sq. ft. rectangle over an underground
garage, flanked by two allČes of planters with trees and two lower
office/retail buildings. The space was to be open and truck accessible
for multi-use events, although a major water feature was strongly
recommended by the architect.

Internationally known sculptor Athena Tacha was selected by the City of
Dallas Public Art Committee to design the space and fountain, with the
stipulation to create a plaza in the European tradition (at a donor‚s
request, two seated lions like those in Trafalgar Square, London, will
be installed at the plaza‚s south end).

The SWA Group was Tacha‚s main collaborator, responsible for all the
landscape architecture features, the complex working drawings and
general supervision. The fountain system was designed by Fountain
People of San Marcos, TX, and installed by Texas Waterworks of
Carrollton, TX. The pavement and planters were executed by CSA Concrete
of Dallas.
