Sculptists. . . Thanks for all the comments on the 10 Commandments of Public Art. They will be coming in a separate digest devoted to the subject. Brian McAvera will respond to the pile in a subsequent message. Reminder -- ìsculptistî is a made-up word for sculpture enthusiasts of all variety! Reminder -- The email addresses of this list have grown to over 700 international members. I do not control your listing -- YOU DO! If you need to change your address, or you want to remove yourself, or you want someone else to subscribe, the protocol is the same and in your control. Send emails to <outdoor-art-request@sculpture.net> from the account you want actions to take place. Use the SUBJECT BAR to command the computer. Write ìsubcribeî or ìremoveî as appropriate. The Computer obeys your commands instantaneously. Here is a new system to help you focus only on info that may be pertinent to you. I list four categories and number the entries for the Digest. You should be able to scroll through these groupings and find the stuff most interesting to you. I bring your attention to our entry #1. Einar brings up a valid criticism of the Listserv. I simply remind all of you, whether you are from the USA or no, that this Listserv is not a newsletter, but simply a forum for all the members to communicate with each other. As moderator, I simply take the material that comes in to me, and organize it for distribution to you. There are many members from outside the US on this list. If you want to see more of what is happening wherever you are, you need to tell me, so I can pass it along! If all of you took a second to make a paragraph reporting your activities and opportunities, we would see a much broader international picture. BRING IT ON! Enjoy. Randy CONTENTS: I. To create an understanding for sculpture is a intersting task but after having recieved the newsletter for one year the +ACI-market+ACI- seems to be 95+ACU- USA and a lot of local chat that I and I think most sculptors outside the USA can not use. Creating an understanding for sculpturein the USA is in a way like creating an understanding for live in Europe or Japan where there is a very long sculpture history, history of culture, history of human life. I think it is etremely important to look at sculpture in an international and historical context because sculpture is so many different things depending on the culture it is originated in. And it is still like that. Why is f.eks. japanese sculpture and if we narrow it ,modern japanese stonesculpture so different from the european one or the north american????? If you start to approach sculpture in this context then I may be redy to support, also financially. Warm regards with good wishes for a successfull project. BLACKSMITH LISTSERV Randy, I am on "theforge" listserver through the Artist Blacksmith Association of North America (ABANA). Check it out through their website. abana.org. The listserver sends the same email messages to all the subscribers concurrently, short or long. I believe there are something like 600 subscribers to theforge, and I get between 20 and 50 emails a day. Too much for some people to digest. Ray Miller Cincinnati OPPORTUNITIES 3. PUBLIC ART & PUBLIC SAFETY?? Randy, thanks for all the news that you send out. I was hoping that someone would have some insight or suggestions for me. I am working on an outdoor piece for a public park. It is my foist piece and the city's first piece. The committee is concerned about heads getting caught in areas of the piece. I believe it is a safe piece but I am wondering if there are any specific guidelines about safety in public art that I could refer to. Thanks, Donna M. McCulllough 20. GETTING A PUBLIC ART PROGRAM ROLLING?? Randy Your publication is treasured and hard copy stored for study and reference .If it could be broken down to bi-monthly that would be appreciated. Otherwise I am trying to establish a Sculpture Society in this Ohio River Valley community which has a scant knowledge, facilities, and very little experience, taste and exposure to SCULPTURE especially public or outdoor varieties. There are talented, capable personnel in the immediate educational institutions doing the typical 2-D and ceramics, with lost wax bronze courses eagerly attended. The area is also loaded with industry ( 2 fortune 500 companies,etc.). Anyone out there with tips on how to get an outdoor sculpture park or program started or given continuity, such as some of the competitions frequently mentioned in the literature, or other, it would be sincerely appreciated. Pls. send to ccdeegan@wirefire.com frustrated 3d'er. 21. WEBSITES FOR PUBLIC OPINION IN SACREMENTO, CA http://www.sacbee.com/content/news/story/1397196p-1471258c.html http://www.towerbridge.dot.ca.gov/ The first has a bit of background. The second is the DOT's site for the poll. Both have photos and renderings. They're both interesting pages. It's supposed to be restricted to Greater Sacramento residents. I lived in Nevada County, CA (95959 was my zip code) for a number of years, so I feel like an interested party. I suspect if you have any sort of Northern California zip code, you're in the club. I'm sure your readers can figure that out for themselves.
