As a somewhat demoralised monumental artist I appreciate your concern for a lack of consideration for significance and beautiful in the selection of public art by the "experts". Here in Australia the general community's attitudes to public art and their sculptors has been negative. Sculpture as a profession lacks credibility. One of the main reasons is because mainy works that lack beauty or significance have been installed in high profile locations at public cost with little public consultation through major cities. Here in Sydney there are many exambles of work being installed that are quite obviously not selected on the basis of merit, are not significant in that they don't provide insight into important aspects of the location, community sentiment, human nature or the human predicament, are not immediately pleasing to look at and do not have communtiy accceptance. In a society that has not lost all its sincerity, one would think that public art is about revieling a truth, expressing what many have left unsaid or celebrating the all-known. Unfortunately, public art selection processes and determinations are often unaccountable contrived, weighted, and are secretive. A sculptor is not necessarily something to be proud of here in Australia, but then again maybe if your an aspiring sculptor it depends who your sleeping with.
