You write ́ they (the public) by and large, do not value art as it is understood today.î How true. How sad. How inevitable. And I ask, as understood by whom? Does this ́understandingî represent the work of the numerical majority of visual artists working today, inclusive of wildlife, religious and folk artists, landscape painters and all others who fall outside of what has become the mainstream? Or is that ́understandingî shaped only by academia through her suckling spawn, the art media, curators, historians, critics and MFAs? Certainly odd folks have been painting with their poo-poo for centuries. What governing body has determined the unwashed public must now consider the practice art? (if accompanied by a blunt headed artistís statement, natch.) High art has been co-opted, defined and shaped for at least fifty years by an elitist inbred segment of our society, sheltered by tenure, answering only to itself, chewing up and spitting out our most talented to do their bidding. That Art Establishment has studiously chosen to ignore the tastes, needs and instincts of the public most often with blind contempt. Doctors and medical schools do not have the privilege of defining medicine or its purpose...both are defined for them by a public that expects to be cured and thus served. Strange, but of the artists you list, only the work of one (if not her name) would be universally recognized and admired by the public, and Ms. Lin was not educated as an artist. hmmmm. (My mind spins imagining any of her designs, informed by a typical art faculty.. Too pretty! Overly designed! What if you put a row of empty army boots under the names!!) Museum shows of Van Gogh, Monet, Audubon and the like are turning away the crowds, suggesting the unwashed are eager to experience art they can relate to and enjoy, straining to read the tags and better understand, anxious to be literate, but perhaps not at all drawn to the prospect of paying to be offended, confused, BORED or cowed. The academic artistic elite has concluded that skill (traditional or not) is poisonous and exclusionary; beauty is dangerous and cheap; honest clear meaning sophomoric; and only theory heavy concepts lend value in the VISUAL arts. (I have a theory as to why, but that is another posting) Thus they have established a dismissive hostile stand off with the public, which you seem to have embraced. Academia chooses to avoid study of the pan-cultural preferences and instincts for making and treasuring art that have kept the practice alive for thousands of years. They have chosen to first ignore, then bite, then lift their leg on the hand that feeds them. Alas, they now reap what they have sown. The public, by and large, still seeks VISUAL gratification and stimulus, a sense of permanence (sorry Kapoor... and I am oh so sorry Mr. Goldsworthy and Long, as the work is beautiful!) and recognizes extraordinary LEVEL OF SKILL IN EXECUTION as DEFINING to art. (The public is still not ready to embrace art they think they or their eight year old could have done, regardless of how pedestrian that old joke seems.) As was said of Michelangelo, he spoke of what is universal to humankind in a manner that could only be considered Divine. Mainstream contemporary artists want to work at the skill level of everyman, with concepts of interest to a select few, and have society treat them as they did Michelangelo. The illiterate are far too savvy to fall for that.
