Art, even great art, can do little to effectively shape public opinion. Art, specifically photography ( and illustration before it ) can call attention to a social problem, but does so through its literal reporting, infused with artistic passion. No sculpture can do the same, as it cannot report only interpret. ( far too often with a sophomoric grasp of sophisticated subject matter) What great art CAN do is ameliorate the pain of past suffering and lift the soul through dark times. It cannot help resolve current conflicts and very seldom, if not never, changes any opinion. The Vietnam Memorial does an extrodinary job of touching those affected by war, but would have done NOTHING to stop that war forty years ago. (the Goldwater Right wouldn't have blinked) Show me an abstract Peace Monument, and I'll show you what could just as well be a monument to Gestaultists, Space Exploration or The Beauty of Aluminum. Let us all assume for a moment ALL humans, not just enlightened artists, desire peace, shall we? The ongoing problem is how to ACHIEVE peace, and all the tortured trees, cute concepts and brushed Alcoa in the world will have no effect on the peace process, no matter how much an artist may magically and egotistically think it so. If artists are truly interested in peace, I strongly suggest we all become consciencious voters and vocal congressional constituants or donate our graphic skills to peace activists. To suggest art can bring peace or change society is fairyland thinking, an insult to the true power of great art to record the complexity of the human condition, offer transcendent experience and inspire others to extrodinary accomplishment. We might consider donating work to some fund, but unless the effort is ongoing, the effect would be miniscule and, overtime, an insult to those it was meant to help. "We Are The World" made some famous and hasbeen musicians look swell, and fed some hungry for a short time, but it has fallen off the charts, and millions are still starving. I worry that there might be more than a few amoungst us most innocently interested in easing our own sense of helplessness, or rabidly interested in promoting our own careers, upon the backs of starving Afghanis who will need decades of support to be served. And to even think some Palestinian/Israeli happy joint art project could in any way ease the tensions built on such bloodsoaked, sacred ground is beyond assinine. Here's a thought, send envoys to the Middle East to smuggle out any art that could possibly be being done under such conditions and bring it to this country so we might see some AUTHENTIC record of war, hell and the longing for peace, and consider our own complicity in thier pain, the HARD way. (hey! and maybe LEARN something about Middle Eastern culture..that couldn't hurt!) Promote it, sell it and send the money back to the artists and their families. We American artists could volunteer to, anonymously, put up and take down the shows. (Wouldn't some anonymous long term effective effort put a pin in the public perception of artists as fruity narcissitic self promoters?) Or, let us focus on recording the fears and confusion of living now in this country (especially the Arab American artists among us) and leave the interpretation of war and peace to those who really know what they're talking about. Remember, before Picasso painted Guernica, he lived through a war.
