Artist's Statement
Light photos are series of slides that were
taken in total darknessusually at night,
but sometimes in caves or underground tunnels.
I held the camera lens open, sometimes for
several hours.
Each slide to me is record of an art performance
in front of the camera using additive light
sources to create color, patterns and shapes
on the film. Each slide is a record of a place
and time that is very specific, some light
photos were done in the mountains of Colorado,
along rivers and waterfalls in Tennessee,
and in the caves and hills of Missouri.
Sometimes there is an element of danger involved
in the work. It can be difficult and dangerous
to walk along rocky cliffs in total darkness.
There are also dangers involved in spraying
fire from an aerosol can while repelling down
a waterfall. I'm not recommending that anyone
else try these things.
But for me, there is a art that I can achieve
from these sculptures of light in time and
space that can evoke imagery not gained any
other way, not even with computers.
